The number of pups in a litter can vary from 1 to 12, but 4-7 babies are common. The birth process is very complicated because of the large skulls of these dogs, so caesarian section is often necessary. The young are born almost bare and blind. They will open their eyes in 7 or 14 days after birth. If the eyes have not opened within 14 days, they should be opened by a vet. All animals with visible defects should be euthanazed. The young dog should be at least eight or nine weeks old before it is taken from its home kennel it also requires around the clock care up until 3 to 4 weeks of age.
