This breed originated in England for bull baiting. Bull bating as a “sport” earned a great popularity in the middle ages, especially among royalty and noblemen. Being used in bull baiting contests, dogs of this breed did not usually fight with other dogs. Later the contests were outlawed and the breed's fanciers did their best to preserve the dog. The breed's standard was fixed and now only the American Kennel Club can change it. Its present functions are: watchdogs, guardians, and family pets. The temperament of these dogs is jovial and amiable; they are willing to please and good with children, although may be stubborn and dominative.
